Submits First Module of Orathecin's(TM) 'Rolling' New Drug Application
as an Oral Treatment for Pancreatic Cancer SuperGen Inc. announced today that it has begun submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) for its anticancer compound Orathecin(TM), an oral chemotherapy compound in the camptothecin class, for the treatment of pancreatic cancer patients who are refractory (resistant) to available therapies. The submission will occur on a 'rolling' basis and is expected to be completed by the end of the first-quarter of 2003. The first module submitted contained the chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) section. ...full article Aphton
Announces Australia Grants Orphan-Drug Designation for its Anti-Gastrin
Immunogen G17DT for Treatment of Both Gastric Cancer and Pancreatic
Cancer Aphton Corporation announced today that it received official notice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the regulatory authority in Australia equivalent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, granting its anti-gastrin G17DT Immunogen Orphan-Drug status for treatment of both gastric (stomach) cancer and pancreatic cancer. Unlike in the United States, the Australian orphan-drug designation automatically confers priority evaluation for the drug ahead of other evaluations. ...full article Isis
Pharmaceuticals Reports New Data From Phase II Clinical Trial
Of ISIS 2503 Plus Chemotherapy in Pancreatic Cancer In a Phase II clinical trial of ISIS 2503 in combination with gemcitabine, median survival time was more than six months in patients with pancreatic cancer, exceeding the primary endpoint of the study. Summary results of the Phase II study were described yesterday at the 6th National Institutes of Health Therapeutic Oligonucleotide Interest Group Symposium in Bethesda, Maryland. The North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), a North American cancer cooperative group with its research base located at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, designed and conducted the Phase II trial. Mayo Clinic has submitted complete results from the study to the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Based on the findings of this trial, Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is considering various strategies for potential Phase III development of ISIS 2503 in pancreatic cancer. ...full article Clinical

Therapy Fights Pancreatic Cancer in Mice Because it is often caught only in its more advanced stages, pancreatic cancer -- the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the US -- is rarely curable. But Japanese researchers are using gene therapy to achieve what they call "dramatic" results in shrinking pancreatic tumors in mice, even after the cancer has spread beyond the pancreas. ...full article A

in Phase IIa Pancreatic Cancer Trial GlycoGenesys, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on carbohydrate-based drug development and Elan Corporation, plc, today announced the Phase II(a) clinical trial results from their oncology joint venture. The Phase II(a) clinical trial evaluated patients with refractory or relapsed pancreatic adenocarcinoma (cancer) treated with GCS-100, an experimental cancer drug candidate, at a dose of 20 mg/m2, twice weekly. The clinical trial enrolled 20 patients in an open-label, single-arm program designed to obtain additional data regarding the agent's safety and clinical activity at the 20mg/m2 dose level. As is customary in such clinical trials, patients were taken off GCS-100 if their disease progressed as determined by tumor lesion measurements. ...full article Laparoscopic
