OSI Pharmaceuticals announced today that it has completed the initial stage of the on-going Phase III trial for Tarceva(TM) (erlotinib HCl, OSI-774), in pancreatic cancer. The Phase III study is being conducted by OSI in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group and is an 800 patient randomized, controlled study assessing the use of Tarceva(TM) in combination with gemcitabine (Gemzar®), the only approved front-line chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer. Improvement in patient survival is the primary end-point in this study.

Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced findings of a preclinical trial of its investigational drug, MLN341 (formerly known as LDP- 341 and PS-341), studying its effects with different chemotherapies against a variety of solid tumors in mice. The results, announced at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in San Francisco, CA, demonstrated that MLN341, when combined with chemotherapy, consistently caused greater decreases in tumor size than either treatment given alone.

Repligen Corporation announced today that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to market SecreFlo(TM) (synthetic porcine secretin), the first synthetic version of the hormone secretin. SecreFlo(TM) has been approved for stimulation of pancreatic secretions, including bicarbonate, to aid in the diagnosis of pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, or chronic pancreatitis and stimulation of gastrin secretion to aid in the diagnosis of gastrinoma, a pancreatic tumor which may become cancerous.

SuperGen Inc. announced today the long-term follow-up and independent review of results from a previously announced Phase II clinical study of its oral anticancer compound Orathecin(TM) (rubitecan) has confirmed the drug's activity in patients with refractory pancreatic cancer who have failed prior treatments. The data, previously presented at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), were reviewed by an independent third-party expert radiology review panel.
