Phase
II Anti-Gastrin 17 Vaccine Trial Results The Aphton Corporation of California presented results of a Phase II clinical trial, consisting of 30 evaluable patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, to the annual meeting of the British Society of Gastroenterology in Birmingham, England (March 21-23) in which all patients received either lover-dose or higher-dose amounts of its anti-gastrin 17 vaccine (which blocks the gastrin-17 growth factor) with no additional or concurrent therapies. The median survival duration of the evaluable patients was 6.7 months. The vaccine appeared to be well-tolerated. Plans for a Phase III clinical trial are contemplated. Rubitecan
Receives NDA Approval in Canada SuperGen, Inc. of San Ramon, California has indicated that theTherapeutics Programme of Canada has approved its Investigational New Drug (IND) application for use in clinical trial studies involving the treatment of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. EMD
121974 in Phase II Trials Merck KgaA of Darmstadt, Germany has announced that the initiation of Phase II clinical trials against pancreatic adenocarcinoma beginning in October, 1999 with its angiogenesis inhibitor agent, EMD 121974. Marimastat
Trial Results Disappointing British Biotech has released the results of its Phase III clinical trials comparing the effects of its agent marimastat (an orally administered matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor) plus gemcitabine against gemcitabine alone. The combination failed to demonstrate any survival advantage as compared to gemcitabine. There was a possible trend noted in that patients with less extensive disease appeared to respond better to the marimastat regimen. Positive
Trend in Ras Vaccine Study Results Based on research sponsored by HYDRO ASA and Merck KgaA, Dr. Gustav Gaudernack of the Norwegian Radium Hospital presented preliminary Phase I/II clinical trial results to the Joint Congress of the British Society for Immunology & British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology during late November 1999 which appeared to indicate that those patients (out of a total of 38 patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer) who demonstrated an immune response to vaccination with ras peptide fragments combined with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, appeared to acquire survival advantage. A majority of those vaccinated demonstrated an immune response, and no serious side-effects were noted. |
